A Phenomenological study on the suicide attempts among alcoholics

Abstract

Alcoholism has been associated with an increased risk of suicide attempts. This study aimed to explore meaning and essence of suicide attempts among alcoholics. By answering the question "What is the essence on suicide attempt experiences of alcoholics?", phenomenological approach by Colaizzi used for data analysis. The data were collected through in-depth interview with 8alcoholisc who had suicide attempt history. As results, 14categories appeared from 5themes as data analysis. These themes were characterized as follows; ``Entering alcoholism swamp``, ``Entering vicious cycle``, ``Full speed towards suicide with alcohol``, ``Two-sided meaning of suicide and drinking``, ``Living with dual restriction``. Based on these findings, we have discussed the meaning of suicide attempts of alcoholics and suggested effective social work intervention services. The importance of integrative interventions in suicidal alcoholics were identified with a focus on priorities and directions for future study.
